We’re expecting offspring out of Australia’s national supreme exhibit: Dawson Arrow of Macanleister. He’s such a beautiful example of true Scottish Highland characteristics.

Dawson’s sire, Gusgurlach of Windrush, was recently called the most desirable sire ever! Dawson’s son just proved himself as this year’s supreme exhibit in the Australian nationals.
Our other new sire, and just as exciting because we were able to use heifer sexed semen, is LSR Orison. Orison’s genetics, recommended to us by Jacob Larson, will add another great dimension to next year’s Elm Hollow calves.

Our herd sire, WKA Braxton, will cover those we did not perfectly time in our AI efforts. He’s outstanding as well! Braxton placed first in his class in the 2023 international virtual show.

RETIREMENT for OUR OLDER COWS MEANS NEW HEIFERS COMING to ELM HOLLOW!
With all calves on the ground and seeds for next year’s crop planted and growing, we are looking for and adding some wonderful new genetics. AI will be helpful in improving our genetics base and the selection of a few new faces will allow us to keep our much loved herd sire for a little longer.

Elm Hollow Halter School will open soon with classes preparing our current calves for new homes. Maybe your home will want to welcome a new member of the family? If you’re thinking about starting your own little fold, there are some things you need to know.

RETIRING COWS MAKE WONDERFUL PASTURE ORNAMENTS
As cows reach the age of retirement, they need a soft place to live out their life.
Many folks don’t want the hassle of breeding, calving, dealing with the problems of raising babies, training and registering calves, etc. and yet they would like to have some of these beautiful, gentle cows in their pasture to enjoy.

Their lives span about 20 years, yet some retired cows have been known to live to 28 or even older. Many cows calve into their late teens, but that does shorten their life span.

I know that most breeders simply process older cows, but I have a hard time doing that. These girls have given me their best, so I’m looking for a soft place for them to retire after age 15.

We will have at least four and maybe five cows that are ready for retirement this fall. If you’re interested in some lovely, gentil pasture ornaments, please let me know.
