Elm Hollow Suffers a Tragedy

WKA Braxton, our award winning herd sire suffered an injury that left him unable to breed and in constant pain. Our vet advised us that the humane thing to do would be to put him down. Tears flow every time I think about this beautiful sweet bull and the fact that we had not at least had the foresight to collect him to be used in our AI program in the future.

We will have a skilled taxidermist preserve him as a reminder that a great bull means everything to us as breeders of these beautiful creatures.

Calving Season ’26 is Off to a Great Start!

First on the scene was Elm Hollow’s Shining Star. She is out of New River Isla by EH Ban Diuc’s Bonus. Bonus was born here at Elm Hollow Farm. The good folks at Highland Legacy Farm have agreed to allow Bonus to come back and visit with our ladies for a few weeks after we finish our AI breeding this year.

Second in the lineup is a calf that likely will become Elm Hollow’s next herd sire. We named him Stuart in honor of the House of Stuart that ruled Scotland in the late 17th and early 18th century. Stu is out of Schon Boden’s Isabel by Dawson Arrow of Macanleister who was sired by Gusgurlach of Windrush. Thinking Stu will be an outstanding addition to our breeding program.

Dawson was awarded 2023 Australian Highland Cattle Society Inc National Show Supreme Exhibit!

Dawson didn’t stop with one calf here. The very next day, CSF Honeysuckle birthed a beautiful heifer by Dawson. She is so spunky that we named her Sassy Lass. She is the instigator of the zoomies that entertain us each evening in the pasture. Her playfulness is so contagious that the cows often join in the fun.

The fourth new baby to join us was Elm Hollow’s Sage. Her dam, LEA Never Enough, has given us reason to celebrate every spring. Sage is our first heifer out of our beloved Braxton and she is practically perfect in every way. Picturing three years down the road a calf from her with Stu as sire.

Latest addition is Elm Hollow’s Samuel. Sam was born to one of our very best cows, Muirneag 3rd of VH also sired by Braxton.

When Muirneag’s last calf was born, I really didn’t expect another from this lovely lady. She had a hard time recovering from the stress of raising a calf at age 15, but to our surprise, she was one of the first to breed back.

I woke Sam up from his nap in the sun to snap a photo so I could include him in this newsletter.

Highland Classifieds

Be watching for the posting of some of our older cows that need to be retiring soon. They will need loving homes to spend their golden years munching grass and hay and posing for photos. https://elmhollowfarm.com/submitting-classifieds/

A classifieds page provides the following services:

  1. FOR SELLERS: A very accessible place to advertise your registered calves for sale. If you google Highland Cattle for sale, you will see that Elm Hollow farm is among the top 10 sites on that search and is the only actual seller of cattle.
  2. FOR SELLERS: A guide to taking effective photos for selling your cattle.
  3. FOR SELLERS: A guide for sellers of questions to ask prospective buyers so they can determine if the home seems suitable for their calf/cow.
  4. FOR SELLERS: The construction of your ad including your comments about your cattle, (temperament, expected size, stage of halter training if any, etc.)
  5. FOR BUYERS: A guide for buyers to help them determine what they need to provide good care for a Highland and what type calf/cow will meet their needs.
  6. FOR BUYERS: A place where sellers have been screened to weed out scammers. Be aware that some scammers are very clever and there is a possibility that one might fool me, but I’ll be doing my best to make sure every offering on this site is legitimate. The ultimate decision to purchase will be the responsibility of the buyer.
  7. FOR BOTH SELLERS AND BUYERS: I am doing more frequent newsletters with the option for sellers to have their new classified listings mentioned with one photo, brief description, registration number and contact information listed in the newsletter for $10.00, with a free mention of new additions since the last newsletter.
