It’s Time to Train !!!
All calves are now old enough to wean, so our halter training is scheduled to begin on August 15. One sweet steer from Piney Highlands will be joining the five Elm Hollow calves this year as we train them for wintering at the National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC.
The calves from Elm Hollow that wintered there last year loved the daily attention from all their adoring fans who visited the Whitewater Center last year. Calves will be there from early November until mid March. These are the members of the new class.

In March 2027, Sassy Lass and Sean will be sold. They may be picked up either in Charlotte or here at Elm Hollow Farm.
I’m often asked to help other breeders sell a calf that is ready to leave home and the first thing I ask is if that calf is halter trained. Many of the sellers seeking that assistance tell me that halter training is too much effort. Let me just tell you that a calf that has been handled and halter trained is worth more than one that has not.
The calves that were trained last year are now 18 months old and have been on their own in the pasture for almost a year. We decided to part with a couple of our heifers from that group and wondered how they would respond.
They remember! It was easy to pull both LCL Shae-Lyn and Elm Hollow’s River, AHCA # 72442 right out of the pasture and then halter, tie, and groom them. Shae-Lyn is already sold and River is just now being listed for sale for $8,500.

River has been color tested and is dun.
- Dam: Windemere Dare
- Sire: WKA Braxton.

NEW Scottish Highland Cattle Show – AHCA, ROE-Sanctioned
Don’t miss out on Tennessee’s first annual state Highland cattle show in conjunction with the Tennessee State Fair!
On Tuesday, August 18, the Wilson County – Tennessee State Fair hosts its first-ever Scottish Highland cattle show, bringing one of the world’s oldest registered breeds to the show ring.

Update on Bulless Breeding
From 21 Breeding Cows, We Got 21 Pregnant Mamas!
Thanks to our new Sense Hub monitoring system (https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/hub/sensehub/) we were able to successfully breed all of our cows on a natural heat cycle. No syncing, no patches, no shots, only one trip through the headgate to breed this way. It did take two tries on seven of them, but the heifers took first time!
It was an investment, in the $5K range, but once it was set up, it will be here for many years. We saved so much time and money and cow trauma that it will certainly pay for itself just this year. If you’re interested, contact Ellie at Merck Cattle Monitoring. Be sure to tell her that I sent you so I can earn a free ear monitor tag.
Thanks!
Nancy
